The snare drum is "instrumental" in providing a beat. It is the backbone of the rhythm. When played as part of a drum set, the rhythm is kept between the bass drum, snare drum and hi hat in most styles of music.

Learning proper snare drum technique is a great start to being able to play an entire drum set and keep rhythm for a band.

The drums are the anchor in popular music and keep the entire band together, so as the drums lay down the rhythm, other players including the bass player can lock onto this rhythm and establish a "groove". In a way, the drummer is out there by themself because they don't have much to lock onto as they are the anchor.
